Your Own Worst Enemy: 5 Ways To Avoid Self-Sabotage
Self-sabotage can be mentally and emotionally draining for those who experience it frequently. It is important to remember that everyone goes through stages of self-sabotage throughout their lives. It is common because it is the old, conditioned you, fighting with your new visions and goals. In order to move towards new goals and dreams we have to break old mental and emotional patterns that have been conditioned which isn’t always the easiest. Here are some quick tips to help break self-sabotage patterns and achieve goals and dreams faster.
- Change your environment
One of the fastest ways to break self-sabotage cycles is to change your environment especially your peer group if they do not support and challenge your growth. Spend time developing relationships with people who demand more of themselves and continue to grow, learn and challenge themselves. This way we are naturally forced to live life at a higher standard.
- Get a coach
A coach or mentor is a must for everyone. I have found a clear distinction between those who struggle through life and those who achieve great things and that is coaches and mentors. A coach will condense years and maybe even decades of wisdom into precise tips and tools to help you grow faster. Why try to figure everything out on your own or take advice from people who aren’t results experts. In fact I have many coaches and mentors for different areas of life and business.
- Get clear with your goals
Clear and precise goals are a must.
Most people set general goals such as I want to lose weight or have more money. Both are generalised ideas that your brain will take literally. For example you may want to buy a bigger house worth $750,000 so you set a goal to make more money. Your brain takes “more money” literally and then when you find 10 cents on the ground your brain thinks it has accomplished the goal and goes back to doing what it has always done and is comfortable with. This then leads to disappointment and self-sabotage as consciously you know that your new house is worth $750,000 but all you keep reinforcing is more money. Get clear and get precise with your goals and plans. This is where a good coach can help.
The power of meditation has been known for thousands of years but modern science has started to understand the true power and potential of meditation. Many high achievers and celebrities have also spoken about the power of meditation including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey and more.
Meditation helps to increase the amplitude of brain waves (meaning more brain power) as well as heart brain coherence, which helps to align thoughts, intentions and emotions.
- Become a student of life
Never stop learning.
When I was a kid I struggled with learning difficulties, ADD and dyslexia. When I realised that learning didn’t have to be boring and that I could learn in many different ways from attending events with experts of their fields, reading books, watching videos and documentaries as well as learning straight from experts in their fields over coffees or lunch, then learning became a major part of my life. Continual learning challenges a person to think in new and empowering ways. Never stop growing and learning.
Something that helped me a lot with old self-sabotage patterns is to understand that nothing is perfect and that every person sabotages their new goals and dreams at points throughout their life. It is a normal part of human growth. Do not beat yourself up and hate yourself as it will affect your self worth and then you will struggle to achieve anything of worth for yourself. Just understand it is all there to help us gain strength and learn more about ourselves.
