When Goals are Forgotten: 5 Steps to Get Back on Track
At the start of the year we have a lot of motivation to get cracking with our New Year goals but we can easily fall off the bandwagon. In fact, 85% of people would have completely given up or stopped chasing their goals by the end of January. Only about 1-2% of people actually make it through the year and achieve their goals they set at the start of a year.
So how do you get back on track with your goals?
Make a commitment to yourself
Firstly, remake a commitment to yourself. Write down what you want to achieve, set a target for yourself and put a deadline on it to make it measurable. If it is a goal that is going to take you a few months, set check in points throughout for mini milestones along the way to keep you motivated and moving forward. Make sure you are super clear on what you want to achieve, ambiguity will easily distract you and keep you going off track.
Find someone or something to keep you accountable. If you know you have to check in with someone, naturally we want to make sure we look good. It is also good so when you are slacking off, your accountability buddy can give you the kick up the butt you need to stay on track. Check out apps also that help you track specific goals, eg quit smoking apps, weight loss tracking apps etc.
Set up a rewards system
Don’t forget to reward yourself on your journey. Set up a rewards system, especially progress rewards. It will keep you motivated and reward your hard work along the way. Just make sure the reward isn’t something that is going to jeopardise your goal eg. Don’t reward yourself with junk food or chocolates for reaching a weight loss milestone. Keep it positive and affirming to your goal.
We make life affirming and positive decisions when we are inspired. Find people, stories, and sources of inspiration to guide you towards your goal. Attend seminars, read books, listen to podcasts, watch documentaries, find images etc. There are many things that can get you inspired. To keep you inspired daily create a vision board and place it in an area you look at regularly. Take a picture of it on your phone to carry it with you all the time.
Learn how to do it right
To maximise your results even more, learn how to do goal setting right in the first place. Invest in a specific tool, planner, course or seminar to show you:
- How to set goals right
- How to stay on track
- How to create the mindset you need to achieve your goals
- How to stay accountable and learn what you have been doing wrong in the past and how to fix it.
