Body image is a growing concern in the 21st century with more and more women and men are feeling self-conscious about their bodies and appearance. Bikini body programs, diets, pills and plastic surgery are becoming common practice in today’s society.
So what can we do to feel more comfortable in our own skin?
If you have body conscious issues, then your mindset is a big driver of this which means you need to work on your own self-confidence, self-worth, your values and learn how to love yourself. Invest in books, audio programs, courses and seminars where you can learn how to build your self-worth, self-love and how to control your emotional states.
- Eat healthy and exercise
This may be a given but eating healthy and exercising is essential to feeling good in your own skin. Eating healthy gives you good energy to keep you thinking straight and clear and will help you get good sleep at night. Exercising produces feel-good hormones that will make you feel great, increase your energy and give you a boost of motivation. Find an exercise you like doing to keep you motivated to do it. Choose lots of healthy whole foods and drink lots of water, be aware of any food or drinks that lower your energy or you get negative reactions from and try to reduce or eliminate these from your diet.
- Quit the “when this happens, then I will…” syndrome
Often people have the mindset of “when this happens then I will”, in other words they will wait to achieve something first before they do something else. Eg “When I lose this weight, then I will buy a new bathing suit” etc. Often this is a set up for failure as it keeps you unhappy and you don’t enjoy the process so it becomes a chore. Do things for yourself now to make you feel good. Eg if you are waiting to buy new clothes after you lose weight, go buy something now to feel good now. If you feel good now you will be motivated to keep that feeling.
If you don’t feel good in your own skin, often your thoughts around your body image will have more negative thoughts than positive thoughts. You want to change that and start creating more positive thoughts around yourself and your body. Find positive affirmations to practice everyday to start cementing positive emotions inside you. Also practice writing down things you are grateful for. The more you can recognize positives in your life the more your brain will switch onto good things around you.
- Stop comparing yourself to others
We are all different so stop comparing yourself to others. Your happiness depends on you and you alone. You are the one in control of your mental and emotional state. You can only change yourself so therefore you need to be happy with yourself. If you are always comparing yourself to others you will never be happy. Learn to be happy with yourself. Start looking at things in your life that are great. Often there is more than meets the eye when it comes to others, they may seem happy, confident, successful etc on the outside and what is portrayed on social media, but do you really know what is happening underneath? Focus on yourself.
